38 Shot, 8 Fatally, in Chicago controlled by firearm during Memorial Day weekend.

38 people were shot dead, at least eight fatally, in Chicago controlled by a firearm during the weekend of Memorial Day.

The murders are in line with what the city has witnessed in recent years. ABC7 reports that there were seven murders during Memorial Day weekend in 2017 and eight during the same weekend in 2016.

Chicago’s overall homicide rate is slightly lower than last year’s at this time. USA Today reports that there were 191 murders so far this year, there were 237 murders at this time last year. However, the homicide rate is still high enough to put Chicago “on track once again to register more homicides than any other US city.”

In fact, “Chicago has still organized almost as many homicides so far in 2018 as New York (106) and Los Angeles (92) combined.”

This violence is happening in a city where gun control has been the solution to crime. The city banned ownership of small arms in 1982, only to see that the murder rate skyrocketed. The Chicago Police Department reported that there were 850 homicides in 1993, 930 homicides in 1994, 921 homicides in 1991 and an astonishing 940 homicides in 1992. However, city leaders refused to lift the gun, only when the ban It was overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States in 2010.

At the moment, city and state leaders are pushing for more control as the solution to violence in Chicago.
