President Donald Trump has agreed with North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, to stop the war games.
This is a complete 180 degree turn around from the harsh threats and aggressive tweets the two leaders exchanged last year. This move comes as a shocker to legislation in the Republican Party as well as American allies.
In a joint statement made Tuesday, Kim and Trump agreed to work towards a common goal of denuclearization of Korea. The American President has agreed to stop joint-military activity with South Korea to help deescalate tensions with North Korea. Trump has also offered to lift sanctions on North Korea.
Donald Trump said, “We will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money, unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should. But we’ll be saving a tremendous amount of money, plus I think it’s very provocative,”
This is a very controversial decision to say the least as it leaves the super power USA in a vulnerable predicament if North Korea does not act in accordance with this agreement. Also, there has been no spoken promise that South Korea will halt its aggressive military involvement.
If both parties can successfully hold up their ends of the bargain this can be great for America, and even better for North Korea as they will have many opportunities to be more involved with the free world.
