At least three people have been killed when a five- story building collapsed in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi Sunday.

While the cause of the collapse is unknown, officials say there are approximately 30,000 to 40,000 buildings built without approval in the capital are at risk. Dozens of people have lost their lives in tragedies of this nature and caliber in recent years. Last June two people died when a seven-story block fell down in Nairobi’s poor southern Pipeline Estate. A year prior to that 49 people died when their building collapsed during a heavy, night-time rain storm.

The police department’s disaster management, Pius Maasai, recommends residents vacate buildings they suspect are unsafe. He also said, some of these unsafe buildings will be demolished immediately.
