A German police officer shot an Austrian who was holding a knife in the Berlin Cathedral on Sunday afternoon.

The 53-year-old man was shot in the leg, Berlin police said. A police officer was also injured in the incident and taken to the hospital.

The police said there were no signs of any terrorist motive.

Around 100 people were in the building at the time of the incident, around 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

Police said they had been alerted by an emergency call from a cathedral employee.

A police statement urged people to “avoid speculation” and said more details of the incident would follow.

Witnesses quoted in the German media said the man appeared to be in a “confused” state.

The video of the witnesses witnessed a squad of policemen with machine guns installed outside the cathedral, with a police tape placed around the building.

Psychological counseling was offered to those who witnessed the events.

The elaborate 19th century church is located in the center of Berlin, on the historic Museum Island, and is one of the main tourist attractions of the city.
