The Fuego (“fire” in English) volcano erupted about 25 miles south-west of Guatemala City Sunday. This has been the country’s most deadly eruption in over a century, killing at least 25 people. In 1902 the eruption of the Santa Maria volcano killed thousands of people.
Lava flows moved rapidly throughout villages, stifling and burning people inside their homes. Many people are missing. Hundreds of others are injured.
Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has made provisions for three days of national mourning.
In a statement issued late on Sunday, he spoke of the nation’s “deep pain” caused by the “irreparable losses” in human lives.
