First there was the “Blue Whale Challenge,” then children blamed murder attempts on “Slender Man,” and now teens are taking their lives in the name of “MoMo.”
A new lethal challenge has infiltrated gaming groups, WhatsApp, and Facebook groups across the globe. In it, teens are encouraged to inflict harm upon themselves. The last part of the game is a suicide dare. If players fail to complete the challenges in the game, they receive threatening messages from an avatar dubbed “Momo”, a bird-like woman with eyes protruding out of her head, who says the user will be cursed with an “evil spell.”
Two teens in Columbia have committed suicide doing the “MoMo” challenge last week. They both passed within 48 hours of each other. A 12-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy both hanged themselves in lieu of the suicide game.
According to investigators, the teens knew each other. The boy shared the game with the younger girl via WhatsApp.
Last month, the “MoMo” was shared on Minecraft, which made Microsoft intervene and take precautionary measures.Rewards Fuel social media contests
