A Taiwanese passenger train, called the Puyuma, derailed when it approached a sharp curve around 5pm Sunday. The accident killed 18 people and injured 170 others.
The high-speed train, which moves up 93 mph faster than any other train in Taiwan, was carrying nearly 400 passengers from Taipei to Taitung.
According to reports from the Taiwanese government most deaths were in the front car. So far there has been no explanation for the cause of the accident. Investiagations are under way.
Ministry of National Defense spokesman Chen Chung-chi said some people were crushed to death. They died on immediately.
