Ugandan Parliament has passed a tax on social media users who us the viber, twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook apps. The $.05 tariff will be imposed starting July 1st.
President Yoweri Museveni has encouraged this fee, arguing that social media encourages gossip.
The tariffs don’t stop there. Parliament has implemented a new Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill. This will result in other taxes such as a 1% levy on the total value of mobile money transactions. Some argue this will affect less fortunate Ugandans who don’t use banks.
State Minister for Finance David Bahati told parliament that the tax increases were needed to help Uganda pay off its growing national debt.
